How to Build UTM Campaign Links for Google Ads and GA4

Use source, medium, campaign, term, and content without breaking destination URLs or existing query parameters.

Use consistent names

UTM links are only useful when names are consistent. Decide whether campaigns use lowercase, underscores, or hyphens before traffic starts, because analytics reports treat different spellings as different values.

  • utm_source=google
  • utm_medium=cpc
  • utm_campaign=spring_sale

Preserve existing parameters

If your landing page already has query parameters, append UTM parameters with ampersands instead of starting a second question mark.

Match your ad naming

For Google Ads, keep campaign names close to the account structure you already use. The URL builder creates the tagged link, but your naming rules should come from the reporting view you want in GA4.

Validate after copy

Open the generated URL in a private browser window and confirm the destination page loads before using it in ads.
